Description:
This paint-decorated dower chest represents a strong example of early Pennsylvania German furniture from Dauphin County in the early nineteenth century. Constructed of white pine and poplar, the chest retains its original painted decoration and hardware.
Dower chests were traditionally presented as part of a bride’s dowry and served as both storage and a prominent decorative object within the home. The bold painted surface and confident proportions reflect the regional craftsmanship associated with central Pennsylvania furniture makers of the Federal period.
The chest is attributed to Peter Ranck (1770–1851), a cabinetmaker working in Jonestown whose work is known for its distinctive painted surfaces and refined construction.
