Description:
This impressive carved American eagle demonstrates the skill of a folk sculptor working at the height of the form’s popularity in the late nineteenth century. Fully carved in the round, the eagle displays strong naturalistic modeling and intricately carved feather detail.
The figure stands with wings fully spread atop a turned white pine base and retains its original varnished and painted surface. Sculptural eagles such as this were frequently commissioned for prominent display in public buildings, civic institutions, or the homes of prosperous citizens, where they served as powerful symbols of American identity and patriotism.
