Origin: American
Circa: 1880–1900
Materials & Dimensions: Laminated pine with layered white paint. 14¾ × 21 × 6 inches
Description:
This highly stylized swan is the work of a distinctive American folk sculptor. The elegantly curved neck and simplified form create a strong sculptural presence while maintaining the graceful proportions associated with decorative bird carvings of the period.
Carved from laminated pine, the piece retains a worn surface of old white paint that shows evidence of long outdoor display. Areas of paint loss, abrasion, and old in-use touch-ups contribute to the authenticity and character of the object.
