Description:
This meticulously detailed house portrait depicts a residence in Corryville, Cincinnati during the mid-nineteenth century. The work captures a lively street scene centered around a Gothic Revival dwelling, complete with surrounding gardens, carriage house, and figures engaged in daily life.
The painting includes numerous period details, including a horse-drawn streetcar advertising the “Mt. Auburn Street RR” and “Inclined Plane,” which began operation in Corryville in 1864. Such house portraits served as treasured records of family homes and social life, celebrating prosperity and civic growth during the period.
Little is known about Anthony Rolling, though census records place him in Ohio in 1860 and indicate he was born in France in 1797.
