Steer Weathervane

Jonathan Howard & Co., West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, circa 1860
Moulded copper and cast zinc with original gilded surface.

Length 28 inches

This finely modelled steer weathervane reflects the distinctive style associated with Jonathan Howard & Co., among the most respected makers of nineteenth-century American weathervanes. The form is both sculptural and refined, with a strong sense of presence.

The surface retains its original gilding, lending the piece a particularly rich and desirable appearance. Examples of this quality and preservation are increasingly scarce.
