Watercolor with Pin Pricking

Exceptional pin-pricked watercolor of an overflowing urn of flowers
American, possibly Connecticut, circa 1825-1845
Watercolor on paper, with pin pricking, 12 ¼ x 17 ½ inches, with a period painted frame. In a very fine state of preservation.

In this remarkable watercolor still-life of flowers overflowing a multi-colored urn found in Connecticut, the rare technique of pin-pricking is elevated to its highest level in which a raised three-dimensional quality is achieved. This workmanship is so fine and concentrated that it comparable to needle work embroidery. A closely related example displaying this rare and beautiful technique also found in Connecticut is illustrated in The National Gallery of Art, 101 American primitive Water Colors and Pastels from the Collection of Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch (Washington, DC, 1966), no. 91, p. 106.
