The weathervanes manufactured by the Jonathan Howard Company from 1852 to 1857 are regarded as the most aesthetically pleasing, desirable, and stylized weathervanes ever produced, rivaled only by those of the A. L. Jewell Company of Waltham, Massachusetts. This piece is rare not only because of its possibly unique, charming hound dog form but also because its construction features sheet copper used in the rear, as opposed to the more common three-dimensional hollow body. A crusty, early painted and weathered texture further enlivens the surface.
Note. Tom Geismar and Harvey Kahn, Spiritually Moving: A Collection of American Folk Art Sculpture, #16, is another early Howard vane with similar construction.
