Sold - Lion hooked rug Vermont, c. 1880 Fabric hooked on burlap 29 1/2 x 43 inches While most hooked rugs depicting lions are patterned examples, this bold and charming example resembles the great Edward Hicks lions in his Peaceable Kingdom paintings. It was recently discovered in an old Vermont house where it had remained in the family¹s collection since it was purchased from Schoellkopf, in 1975. Provenance: George Schoellkopf, New York City Illustrated: ³American 18th and 19th century Folk painting and sculpture², catalog by George Schoellkopf, 1065 Madison Ave., New York, New York, January 8th-18th, 1975.
