Sold - Lion hooked rug
Vermont, c. 1880
Fabric hooked on burlap
29 1/2 x 43 inches

While most hooked rugs depicting lions are patterned examples, this bold and charming example resembles the great Edward Hicks lions in his Peaceable Kingdom paintings. This particularly delightful lion image is the best that we have encountered in this medium. It was recently discovered in an old Vermont house where it had remained in the family¹s collection since it was purchased from Schoellkopf, in 1975.
