A Carved and Painted Pine Deer
Pennsylvania, Late 19th Century
Painted pine: 9 x 11 x 31/4 inches

A carved and painted deer with 8-point antlers, on a rock-carved base.

Carved at a time when hunting was likely more important for survival than simply for sport, this folk art representation of a deer exhibits realistic characteristics that suggest a familiarity on the part of the carver. It relates closely to a group of carved animals, including deer, which are illustrated in Richard S. and Rosemarie B. Machmer, Just for Nice: Carving and Whittling Magic of Southeastern Pennsylvania (Berks County, 1991), pp. 34, 52, 54 and 59.
