Carved and Paint Decorated Animal Cane - Sold

Pennsylvania, Second Half 19th Century
Painted hickory
Length: 38 inches; handle length: 5 inches

The handle deeply carved with a dog and below with animals and a hunter carved in bas-relief.
The maker of this cane appears to have been a master carver, for by incorporating the knots and idiosyncrasies of the
wood, he transcends the limitations imposed by the material. Executed with low-relief figures and animals, and
carved with such skill that a dog all but springs out of the handle, this cane bears virtually identical elements to a
cane illustrated in George H. Meyer, American Folk Art Canes: Personal Sculpture (Seattle, 1992), p. 64, no. 95.
