Probably Pennsylvania, c.1880
Carved pine with original polychrome paint and varnish Height 4 inches, length 28 inches
This incredible folk art sculpture depicts an open-mouth alligator with exposed teeth and a bobble head. The entire alligator is notch carved, resembling the work of the noted the self taught artist and folk art sculpture carver Wilhelm Schimmel.
Even though not attributed to him, this piece displays the same power and spontaneity that make Schimmel¹s art so appealing.
