Stencil-Decorated Hinged “Book” Gameboard
Stencil-Decorated Hinged “Book” Gameboard New England, 19th Century White pine 14 x 13 ¾ x 1 ½ inches
Hinged gameboard with stencil-decorated exterior, the interior with a checkerboard on one side and a backgammon board on the other.
Hinged gameboards are relatively common, but most divide either a chess/checkerboard or backgammon board down the middle. This gameboard, with its distinctive stenciled ornament and “book-type” cover, is unusual in that it presents both boards fully intact, with one on either side of the interior. The stenciled cover enables the owner to store it elegantly, as befitting a cherished pastime. For more information on gameboards, see Bruce and Doranna Wendel, Gameboards of North America (New York, 1986). |
