American, possibly Maine, circa 1890-1910
Carved white pine, glass eyes, original painted decoration with resin coating, 12¼ x 24½ x 5 inches.

A similar figure of peacock standing on a book is illustrated in Herbert W. Hemphill, Jr., Ed., Folk Sculpture USA (Brooklyn, 1976), p. 18, and Roger Ricco and Frank Maresca , American Primitive, Discoveries in Folk Sculpture (New York, 1988), p. 203.

This figure evidences a high degree of artistry in its modeling of form and execution of carved detailing.
