CollectionsPaint Decorated Blanket Chest - Sold Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Dated 1807 Pine and poplar 24 x 47.5 x 20.75 inches With hinged lid opening to a well interior with till, the front with painted arched tombstone panel inscribed "1807/Magdalena/Schübp," flanked by red, blue and white compass stars, with blue-swirl paint decoration throughout; raised on a bracket base. The decorative scheme of this blanket chest relates closely to two examples illustrated in Monroe H. Fabian, The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest (New York, 1978) nos. 164 and 177. These are in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Dr. and Mrs. John U. Gardiner, respectively. Though the identity of Magdalena Schübp remains a mystery at present, this chest was likely made or given to her around 1807, to commemorate her marriage. Provenance:
